Frequently Asked Questions

Why register on InterSurgeon?

InterSurgeon has been created to improve the care of surgical patients worldwide by creating partnerships between all members of the surgical team. The intention is that these partnerships should not just involve help with clinical care but also include training, help with educational programmes and improvements in equipment and infrastructure. InterSurgeon makes it easy for all clinicians to find others with shared interests and to form partnerships with other members around the world.

Through our co-operative agreement with the G4 Alliance we also realised that there was a need for an organisation platform to broaden the potential of collaborative partnerships.

So why should an organisation sign up? InterSurgeon allows organisations to publicise their events to all our members and visitors to our website. It also facilitates recruiting of members to visiting surgical teams, training camps and invigilation for exams. InterSurgeon aims to be the go-to resource for anyone considering a role in Global Surgery and knowing which organisation, professional or academic body is working where – and in which clinical field – is vital.

There are further benefits too. There are many small organisations and other types of organisation that are carrying out work in isolation and without reference to others. This can lead to an unequal distribution of assistance and in some cases a duplication of efforts. Adding details of your organisation’s activity to your InterSurgeon profile allows others to see what you are doing and where. This can lead to collaboration and perhaps shared costs and resources.

What is InterSurgeon?

InterSurgeon is a free platform that brings people together in the field of global surgery. Membership is open to all members of the surgical team as well as organisations working to improve the care of surgical patients worldwide.

How does it work?

InterSurgeon members can create offers and requests for Clinical Assistance, Education, Equipment and Training. Offers are automatically matched with requests and – when two or more members match – InterSurgeon sends out notifications so that our members can then embark on collaborations.

Organisations can also add events to InterSurgeon and attach multiple offers and requests to those.

What are offers and requests?

On InterSurgeon, this is where the magic happens. Offers and requests are how you tell the world what it is that you are looking for or are able to provide. If you have posted a request on InterSurgeon, you will then be notified via email whenever another member posts a matching offer. Similarly, if you post an offer, you will be alerted whenever another member creates a matching request. Every month, you’ll also receive a digest via email of all matching offers and requests. You can also search for offers and requests right here on the site.

How long does it take to create an offer or request?

There is no approval process for creating offers or requests, and it can be done in less than 10 minutes if you already have a clear idea of what you want to say. However, we strongly recommend that you take the time to communicate clearly and provide details to back up your offer or request. Remember that this is the first step in creating a partnership that could last for years – it’s important to make a good impression here. You can add photos or videos to enhance your listing.

How can I edit an offer or request after it has been created?

After logging in, view the offer or request that you’d like to edit and then click the Edit button. Make your changes, then click the Update button at the bottom of the page.

Can all members create offers and requests?

InterSurgeon welcomes all members of the surgical team and we are gradually adding full capabilities for all specialties. Currently members in the following specialties can create offers and requests:

  • Anaesthesia
  • ENT
  • General Surgery
  • Interventional Radiology
  • Neurosurgery – both Adult and Paediatric
  • Nursing
  • Ophthalmic Surgery
  • Orthopaedics
  • Plastic, Reconstructive & Burns Surgery
  • Students (can make Offers only – see below)
  • Urology

In addition, all of our organisation members can post offers and requests. Please note that our Student members can only create Offers of assistance (which would then be matched with any member requesting assistance from Students).

All other types of members can freely contact all other members (using the ‘Contact’ buttons on profiles, offers and requests). All members can also opt-in to receiving relevant notifications from organisations in response to requests.

We are actively working on bringing full offer-and-request functionality to members in all specialties. Clinicians who join now within one of the specialties not listed above will have their accounts automatically upgraded as features become available, so there’s no need to wait to join InterSurgeon.

How long does it take to become a member?

It’s possible to complete the Registration form in 5 – 10 minutes. We will then check through your details, as well as the verification details you will be asked to provide via email. If everything’s ok, we will then approve you and you’ll receive an email to say that your account is live. Please be patient during these early days of InterSurgeon. The approval process may be completed in anything from a few hours to a few days. Feel free to contact us if you think things are taking too long.

Can I join on behalf of my hospital/department?

Yes. When you join InterSurgeon as a clinician, you choose your member type from a list that includes:

  • Individual trainee
  • Individual independent practitioner
  • Clinical department
  • Clinical department with teaching programme

How can I edit my profile?

After logging in, visit your own profile page and you will see an option to edit your profile there. You can also update your profile picture. Make your changes, then click the Update button at the bottom of the page.

How can I change my username or the email address I use to log in?

On InterSurgeon your email address is used as your username when logging in. It is not possible to change this yourself but, if you need to do so, please contact our support team who will be happy to help.
