What are the benefits of Help Lightning for surgeons?

In light of the pandemic, and for the foreseeable future, the conventional ways of establishing collaborative partnerships through physical visits are not going to be possible. However, because Help Lightning allows surgeons to collaborate remotely, partnerships can still develop – and more easily than ever before. Help Lightning can be used as a tool for education, mentorship and instruction – as well as for intraoperative case management. It allows both surgical planning and real-time intraoperative advice.

How does it work?

Watch this video to learn how Help Lightning works. This shows use cases in other industries – it’s every bit as useful with surgical applications and can also be used hands-free. All you need to use Help Lightning is your smartphone and an internet connection, though it can also be used with tablets, desktop computers and smart surgical glasses.

Virtual help in real-time

Help Lightning uses Merged Reality to blend two real-time video streams – e.g. that of a remote surgical expert and another surgeon that needs help – into a collaborative environment. This Merged Reality allows the expert to virtually reach out and direct real surgical procedures or training.

Help Lightning

Use your existing devices

Help Lightning runs on your existing mobile devices (iOS, Android) or a web-browser on laptop and desktop computers.

Surgeons can now provide remote assistance as though they’re working side-by-side. They can telestrate, freeze images, use hand gestures, and even add real objects into the merged reality environment.

Help Lightning Software

Be there instantly

Help Lightning is easy, fast and intuitive.

Once you’re in a merged reality call with a colleague or customer, simply tap the mode to change how you interact. Choose whether you’re giving or receiving help, and start collaborating in seconds. Help Lightning’s unique Merged Reality can add missing visual cues, gestures, and non-verbal communication methods to any session.

Using Help Lightning with smart surgical glasses

Take Help Lightning to the next level by pairing it with smart glasses. This innovation allows the wearer to benefit from the assistance of AI or a third-party while performing surgery. When used in conjunction with Help Lightning, smart glasses mean that another surgeon can see exactly what you are seeing and what you’re doing – and also have their hands superimposed over your field of view.

There are a number of models available from different manufacturers including VUZIX, Zebra, and RealWear.

The Advantage of Remote Expertise

Studies show that adding gestures and nonverbal clues substantially improves the speed of understanding. Furthermore, nonverbal cues are 430% more effective than verbal cues and nonverbal cues make Help Lightning’s combination of verbal and nonverbal communication up to 10 times more effective.

Hospital description

Academic (Residency Program)

Description

Department of Neurosurgery №3 (for children) was created on January 3, 1994 at the 9th City Clinical Hospital of Minsk by the National Scientific Academy of The Republic of Belarus with the contribution of Professor, Head of the Department of Neurological and Neurosurgical diseases BSMU F.V. Oleshkevich. For many years he was the scientific head of the Department.

On 01.02.1998 was created the pediatric neurosurgical intensive care unit with a capacity of 6 beds.

In our days, in the department of pediatric neurosurgery work a professional team of pediatric neurosurgeons. In the department are 30-bed multi-branch for patients. Each year, in the department are performing more than 600 neurosurgical operations, from which 120 -130 are performed for tumors of the central nervous system (CNS), 250-270 are for the treatment of the hydrocephalus and its complications.

For the treatment of patients with hydrocephalus of different etiology in the department carried out various shunt surgical techniques (ventriculo-peritoneal, ventriculo-atrial, ventriculo-venous, lumbo-peritoneal shunt) and also for shunting complications, infection, etc.

We do neuroendoscopy in different cases of occlusive forms of hydrocephalus, multilevel occlusion of liquor pathways and brain cysts.

Endoscopically we perform: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), aqueductoplasty, ventriculocysternostomy.

We have considerable experience in the treatment of complications of hydrocephalus and shunt operations.

n the department we are performing neurosurgical intervention for:

  • brain tumors, spinal cord tumors and skull tumors.
  • Congenital CNS Malformations, spinal cord malformations and pathologies of the skull such as Spina bifida; craniostenosis; Chiari malformation, teathered spinal cord syndrome. diastematomieliya, syringomyelia, and others.Treatment of some of this pathologies are treated in the early neonatal period.
  • Hydrocephalus: shunt and endoscopic neurosurgery.
  • Cysts of the brain and spinal cord which are performed both direct and minimally invasive by endoscopic surgery.
  • Vascular diseases of the brain and spinal cord: are treated surgical or endovascular interventions.
  • Peripheral nerve injuries.
  • Degenerative diseases of the spine.
  • Traumatic brain injury. Plastics for skull defects, post-traumatic CSF. Facial nerve plastics.
  • Treatment for liquorrhea with the use of microsurgical and endoscopic procedures.
  • Minimally invasive stereotactic neurosurgery.
  • Surgical treatment of Parkinson's disease, muscular dystonia, essential tremor etc.
  • Surgical treatment of drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.
  • Surgical treatment of spastic syndrome with cerebral palsy (CP).
  • Traumatic brain injury and concomitant injury.
  • Purulent and parasitic lesions of the brain and spinal cord.

For accurate diagnosis we use modern diagnostic techniques such as:

  • Spiral computed tomography (CT) in the dual-energy tomography,
  • CT - angiography;
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 3.0 slides machine;
  • Digital subtraction cerebral angiography, spinal angiography;
  • Neurosonography (brain ultrasound);
  • Duplex ultrasound of brachiocephalic arteries, transcranial Doppler.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG), Holter monitoring EEG, video - EEG, polysomnography, concentration of anticonvulsant drugs in the blood control.
  • Electroneuromyography (electroneuromyographic)
  • Evoked potentials broad modalities - acoustic, visual, cognitive, somatosensory test.

During this time, in the department were treated patients not only from Belarus, but also from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Latvia.

Talabaev Mikle, Head.of the department, PhD, the main specialist of pediatric neurosurgery of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus.
