What are the benefits of Help Lightning for surgeons?

In light of the pandemic, and for the foreseeable future, the conventional ways of establishing collaborative partnerships through physical visits are not going to be possible. However, because Help Lightning allows surgeons to collaborate remotely, partnerships can still develop – and more easily than ever before. Help Lightning can be used as a tool for education, mentorship and instruction – as well as for intraoperative case management. It allows both surgical planning and real-time intraoperative advice.

How does it work?

Watch this video to learn how Help Lightning works. This shows use cases in other industries – it’s every bit as useful with surgical applications and can also be used hands-free. All you need to use Help Lightning is your smartphone and an internet connection, though it can also be used with tablets, desktop computers and smart surgical glasses.

Virtual help in real-time

Help Lightning uses Merged Reality to blend two real-time video streams – e.g. that of a remote surgical expert and another surgeon that needs help – into a collaborative environment. This Merged Reality allows the expert to virtually reach out and direct real surgical procedures or training.

Help Lightning

Use your existing devices

Help Lightning runs on your existing mobile devices (iOS, Android) or a web-browser on laptop and desktop computers.

Surgeons can now provide remote assistance as though they’re working side-by-side. They can telestrate, freeze images, use hand gestures, and even add real objects into the merged reality environment.

Using Help Lightning with smart surgical glasses

Take Help Lightning to the next level by pairing it with smart glasses. This innovation allows the wearer to benefit from the assistance of AI or a third-party while performing surgery. When used in conjunction with Help Lightning, smart glasses mean that another surgeon can see exactly what you are seeing and what you’re doing – and also have their hands superimposed over your field of view.

There are a number of models available from different manufacturers including VUZIX, Zebra, and RealWear.

The Advantage of Remote Expertise

Studies show that adding gestures and nonverbal clues substantially improves the speed of understanding. Furthermore, nonverbal cues are 430% more effective than verbal cues and nonverbal cues make Help Lightning’s combination of verbal and nonverbal communication up to 10 times more effective.

Description

I am  a senior Neurosurgeon practicing in Coimbatore, India  since 1994.  I graduated (M.B.B.S.) from Coimbatore Medical College in 1984 and joined Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC) for my postgraduation and received my  M.Ch. in 1990 and worked in CMC  Hospital for a year as Consultant.

I  joined Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, Coimbatore as a Consultant in 1991.  Sri Ramakrishna Hospital is a 650 bedded Multispecialty Hospital that has been at the forefront of medical care in Coimbatore. I introduced Microneurosurgery to Coimbatore and this part of South India.

I went to the  U.K. in 1992 and worked as Registrar in Neurosurgery at the Regional Neurosciences Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne for a year. I trained in Cerebrovascular surgery (Aneurysm surgery) and specialized in Micro and Minimally invasive surgery of the brain and spinal cord.

I returned to India in 1994 and continued  as Consultant Neurosurgeon at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and also at Masonic Children's hospital. Both hospitals have DNB courses in Surgery and Pediatrics respectfully. I am also a teaching faculty (Professor) at College of Physiotherapy, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences.

With  growing interest in childhood neuro problems, I went to Birmingham, UK in 2002 for training in Neuroendoscopy  and Craniosynostosis  at the Princess of Wales Children’s Hospital. Back in Coimbatore I started doing Neuroendoscopy. Very few centres in India were doing reconstruction for craniosynostois then. I   started  a Craniofacial Unit at Sri  Ramakrishna Hospital and continue to  do reconstruction surgeries.

I was Secretary of the Indian Society for Paediatric Neurosurgery (INDSPN)   for 3 years and now I am the Treasurer of the INDSPN. I am a member of ISPN and Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and Neurological Society of India (NSI).

I am a Rotarian (PHF) and  President -Elect  of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown.

I am the Managing Trustee of a  trust to help poor children with neurological disorders called Brain and Spine Foundation and along with the Rotary Club of Coimbatore Midtown and Ramakrishna Hospital run a project called Project Brainchild  where  brain and spine surgeries are done free or at subsidized  cost.

I would love to join Intersurgeon and offer my services where needed and collaborate with others to do free/ subsidized surgeries in Coimbatore.
