Description
Birmingham Children's Hospital is a regional tertiary teaching hospital and the department of paediatric neurosurgery provides regional care for over 5.5 million children in the West Midlands. It is the Regional Paediatric Neurosurgery Unit and is part of the Neurosurgery training programme.
The department has a 12 month national paediatric fellowship as well as 2 international paediatric fellowships and trains 2 additional national trainees rotating with the adult neurosurgery units in the region. The unit also supports a further one paediatric craniofacial fellow.
The unit performs over 640 paediatric operation annually and is a major national craniofacial, epilepsy, neuro-oncology, hydrocephalus, trauma and complex spine services provider.
It has a robust and active clinical practice and collaborated both nationally and internationally in clinical trials in hydrocephalus, neuro-oncology, epilepsy, metabolic disorders, trauma
The unit has strong links with the Health Education England, the Royal College of Surgeons and takes active interest in education and training.
