Description of Request

In 2011, PFP entered a long-term partnership with QECH/COM to help address the tremendous training needs, and to achieve increased capacity of quality surgical care in Malawi. The startling ratio of physicians to patients in Malawi is approximately 1 doctor to every 50,000 patients, placing Malawi at the top of the worldwide list of countries experiencing a dire shortage of healthcare professionals. Medical education in Malawi was formalized 30 years ago with the opening of the College of Medicine in 1991. Surgical training is conducted utilizing the curriculum of the College of Surgeons of East, Central & Southern Africa (COSECSA), facilitated at the regional level, and implemented at a national level. QECH in Blantyre and Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe are the two teaching hospitals in the country, both striving to bolster surgical training and education so that Malawi’s surgical workforce can continue to grow and strengthen and better serve the overwhelming patient needs.

Like many organizations and institutions, Physicians for Peace (PFP) is evolving its volunteer recruitment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our ongoing Surgical Training Project in Blantyre, Malawi, in partnership with the University of Malawi College of Medicine (COM) and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) typically recruits volunteers to provide 3 months or more of in-person surgical education and training to interns, residents, and clinical officers at QECH, the largest hospital in Malawi. In consideration of safety concerns and widespread travel restrictions related to the global pandemic, we have paused all international travel plans through June 2021
