InterSurgeon are delighted to promote the Society of British Neurological Surgeon’s ( SBNS ) Alan and Diana Karter fund award for neurosurgical trainees from low- and middle-income countries to visit UK neurosurgical units.

The SBNS will provide approximately 5 bursaries a year, each worth £7,000 to support trainee neurosurgeons to visit a neurosurgical department as an observer for a period of four to six weeks. Further bursaries may be awarded but will be considered on a case by case basis.

Bursary applications will be reviewed twice a year. The deadline for applications will be 28th February and 31st August. Applications can be submitted at any time but will be held until the next review.

Trainee neurosurgeons who would like to apply for one of these bursaries should apply in writing to: Carole Turner, SBNS Research Development & Clinical Trials Manager. clt29@medschl.cam.ac.uk This bursary is not open to consultants.

Applications will need to be accompanied by:

  • Two references, one of which must be from the head of the department
  • A Letter of support from a host UK or Ireland neurosurgical unit signed by an SBNS full member
  • A Surgical logbook summary and curriculum vitae

The applicants will first need to arrange an observership with a UK consultant which will include accommodation; the SBNS can provide further information and support in this regard.

After completing the visit the consultant responsible for the trainee whilst in the UK and the trainee themselves should provide a report outlining what they have gained from the visit and submit it to the SBNS Office.
