While in medical school, my career path was altered from pathology to patient facing care due to a trip with a group from Toledo, Ohio, USA to Honduras. I have since completed neurosurgical training with a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery. Currently, I serve as residency program director of neurological surgery at the University of Vermont, USA. Education, in the form of training residents and inspiring medical students, is a top priority, along with ensuring patients receive the best care possible.
I, as many others, chose medicine as a way to professionally challenge myself, and help others. While conditions locally require ongoing surgical care, the suffering in much of the world is greater than in the United States. My internal struggle with global health is the band-aid analogy. But, thanks to Intersurgeon, care can be better coordinated and more continuous in areas of need. In addition, I believe my role as an educator can allow for longer lasting impact and empowerment of communities visited.
