What are the benefits of Help Lightning for surgeons?

In light of the pandemic, and for the foreseeable future, the conventional ways of establishing collaborative partnerships through physical visits are not going to be possible. However, because Help Lightning allows surgeons to collaborate remotely, partnerships can still develop – and more easily than ever before. Help Lightning can be used as a tool for education, mentorship and instruction – as well as for intraoperative case management. It allows both surgical planning and real-time intraoperative advice.

How does it work?

Watch this video to learn how Help Lightning works. This shows use cases in other industries – it’s every bit as useful with surgical applications and can also be used hands-free. All you need to use Help Lightning is your smartphone and an internet connection, though it can also be used with tablets, desktop computers and smart surgical glasses.

Virtual help in real-time

Help Lightning uses Merged Reality to blend two real-time video streams – e.g. that of a remote surgical expert and another surgeon that needs help – into a collaborative environment. This Merged Reality allows the expert to virtually reach out and direct real surgical procedures or training.

Using Help Lightning with smart surgical glasses

Take Help Lightning to the next level by pairing it with smart glasses. This innovation allows the wearer to benefit from the assistance of AI or a third-party while performing surgery. When used in conjunction with Help Lightning, smart glasses mean that another surgeon can see exactly what you are seeing and what you’re doing – and also have their hands superimposed over your field of view.

There are a number of models available from different manufacturers including VUZIX, Zebra, and RealWear.

The Advantage of Remote Expertise

Studies show that adding gestures and nonverbal clues substantially improves the speed of understanding. Furthermore, nonverbal cues are 430% more effective than verbal cues and nonverbal cues make Help Lightning’s combination of verbal and nonverbal communication up to 10 times more effective.

Description

Tshibambe Nathanael Tshimbombu is a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), who immigrated to the U.S. amid political unrest. In the DRC, Nathanael attended College La Fontaine High School where he graduated valedictorian and obtained a degree in Latin and Philosophy. Later, he applied and got admitted to Lovanium School of Medicine but withdrew from Lovanium at the end of second year due to political crisis in the DRC that ensued from the lack of sustained democracy. In the U.S., Nathanael attended Georgia Perimeter College (GPC), where he obtained an Associate of Science in chemistry. At GPC, Nathanael won multiple academic awards including the college’s most prestigious President’s Award. Afterwards, he transferred to Dartmouth and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience; thereafter, he obtained a business certificate from the Tuck School of Business bridge program at Dartmouth. After matriculating at Geisel School of Medicine, Nathanael was one of the 14 U.S. medical students selected for an international fellowship (Fellowship at Auswchitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) to examine current ethical challenges in medicine by analyzing the decisions and actions of Nazi-era healthcare professionals.
Nathanael has a passion for health equity. He has always been aggrieved by the healthcare disparities he has seen first-hand and felt unsatisfied with simply becoming a physician. He wanted to do something about the problem as soon as he could. Amid his busy medical studies, Nathanael started a non-profit called “Bonsomi” with a mission to leverage philanthropy to improve access to care for low-income people. So far, via Bonsomi, he has assisted over 50,000 women and children get access to care free of charge. His works have earned him the 2019 DRC Kin Malebo award for the best role model for Congolese youth in healthcare. He was a nominee for the 2020 Forbes 30 under 30 in Healthcare and social entrepreneurs' categories, and he is the recipient of the 2021 ambassador of social and development award. In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball with classmates.

As a member of the Intersurgeon group, Nathanael hopes to connect with surgeons, neurosurgeons & general surgeons, across the world and be involved in projects, as well as research opportunities. Nathanael aspires to match in neurosurgery in the U.S.A after graduation.

1. Volunteer service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta GA: I volunteer in the neuroscience department. I provided help to all patients to the best of my abilities so as to maintain a satisfactory environment. I received the Volunteer of the month in 2014.

2. Women Deserve Better Initiative: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world with low access to maternal healthcare. This maternal health disparity is worse for those from poor and rural areas. Because of poverty, many pregnant Congolese women rely on affordable traditional medicine, which compromises their health. Thus, many die attempting to bring life into the world. Those who seek medical treatment are kept in the hospital facilities until they settle their medical bills. Such a practice is against deontological ethics since these patients, mostly women, live below the poverty line. To fight this unethical system, I designed Women Deserve Better project and partnered with a journalist/congresswoman Christelle Vuanga to advocate and raise funds to help these underserved women. We helped discharge 60 patients.

Has completed a course relating to global health ethics

In 2018, I was selected as a Fellow at the Fellowship at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE). FASPE provides a unique historical lens to study contemporary ethics in medicine, as well as other professions.
