Description
The Division of Neurosurgery of the Department of Surgery of the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Abuja, was setup only 6 years ago (December, 2012). This is remarkable, being the second tertiary health institution with a neurosurgeon in the capital city of Nigeria, Abuja, and the fastest growing city in the world.
I am the pioneer Neurosurgeon, with one recent addition, in this teaching hospital with 350-bed capacity saddled with the responsibility of setting up a neurosurgical practice with limited resources.
I am a Faculty with the University of Abuja, and so involved in the teaching and training of medical students as well as postgraduates residents of surgery, ophthalmology, and otorrhinolaryngology departments towards their professional certification. Equally, neurosurgery residents are academically and clinically groomed, while awaiting the result of the just concluded (November, 2018) accreditation exercise towards commencement of the postgraduate training program in neurosurgery.
My practice background is general neurosurgery, with particular interest in the development of multiple subspecialty programs beginning with pediatric neurosurgery.
If my goals to provide dedicated and optimal surgical care for patients in our resource-limited setting, and to train ethically and clinically-sound medical students and postgraduate residents are to be achieved, then, collaboration with a like-minded and established institution would be very helpful. The provision of invaluable neurosurgical tools such as an operating microscope, endoscopes, microinstruments etc, would be appreciated. The availability of opportunities for further training towards building of capacity is another area where assistance is needed.
